During my internship tenure at The Boring Company (TBC) from August 2022 to December 2022, I served as an Integrations Engineer with a primary focus on integrating PR3, TBC's fastest tunneling machine to date (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ue-xg8sxFew).
In this role, I held full responsibility for integrating the various subsystems on the machine, and additionally contributed to the integration of propulsion for the Cutterhead of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). This intricate integration process involved close collaboration with Design Engineers to translate mechanical designs and hydraulic schematics into actionable manufacturing plans. I proactively raised flags and made on-the-fly decisions, ensuring the project remained on track and met its objectives.
I was also involved in two world-class projects:
Full-scale Hyperloop Test Chamber Buildout (https://twitter.com/Zhaolijian161/status/1745434642453545278/photo/1):
In this capacity, I took on the leadership role, overseeing a team of 30 technicians specializing in build, hydraulics, and civil engineering to complete the chamber integration. Through effective coordination and leadership, we achieved the project's goals three days ahead of the deadline.
Furthermore, my involvement in the Hyperloop project required a profound understanding of fluid dynamics and system optimization. Specifically, I was tasked with establishing the correlation between pump efficiency and vacuum loss in the Hyperloop. This involved applying my knowledge to calculate potential energy savings during a commute within a vacuum chamber, showcasing a strong analytical mindset and the ability to assess and enhance operational efficiency.
First ever TBM Crane-less Retrieval:
Following the completion of tunneling in Bastrop, Texas, Prufrock 2, The Boring Company's Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), achieved a historic milestone by being the first machine to be retrieved without the use of a crane. In this groundbreaking project, I played a pivotal role as a key contributor. My responsibilities included overseeing the timely integration of the TBM cradle (This is what the TBM was retrieved on) and actively participating in the intricate task of navigating the TBM onto the cradle. This involved taking real-time measurements of the TBM and comparing them to the projected path to ensure precise alignment and track adherence throughout the retrieval process. My contributions were integral to the success of this innovative retrieval method, marking a significant achievement in TBC's engineering endeavors.
